Evaluation Criteria
Water Use
We looked at Water Factor (WF) or water usage per cycle.
The maximum WF for Energy Star qualification is 21.96 L/cycle. Our research also took into account exceptional features that can help consumers use less water when possible.
Energy Use
All appliances reviewed exceed standards for minimum energy efficiency in Canada,
as well as the standards for Energy Star qualification. The maximum possible EnerGuide rating for Energy Star qualification is 324 kWh/year. Exceptional features that can help consumers use even less energy were also taken into account.
Production Process
We looked at methods implemented to improve sustainability of the company’s supply chain and the steps taken to reduce the environmental impacts of manufacturing the appliances. This is somewhat difficult to compare across companies, but we have highlighted notable efforts.
Transportation
Based on distance travelled from point of assembly to Toronto. We also considered
the method of transportation in terms of relative emissions, though this information was not available for all appliances reviewed.
Cost
Judged in relation to all appliances reviewed in the category. “$” represents least expensive while “$$$” represents most expensive
