Quite possibly Canada’s first biodynamic icewine, this wine sets the standard for wine-makers everywhere. The biodynamic processes goes beyond organic and considers the entire ecosystem of a farm from bugs to ‘fertilizer’ to water systems and other animals living on the farm.

This wine is not organic but was still produced in an organic manner. Southbrook views all parts of their winemaking process from growing and fertilizing to crushing and fermenting to bottling and hospitality as interconnected. They believe that creating a winemaking environment that is considerate of the ecosystems around it can create excellent wine for many years to come.

Southbrook Vineyards 2008 Triomphe Chardonnay

This wine is organic and made from hand-picked grapes and naturally occurring yeasts (as are most wines). Part of becoming certified biodynamic is that Southbrook must work with other farms looking to obtain certification, and thus take their contribution to the overall health of the environment beyond their own borders. Some of Southbrook’s wine blends contain grapes from farms where Southbrook is a helping, which means they may not be biodynamic but are still grown with environmental consideration.

Southbrook Vineyards 2007 Cabernet Merlot Shiraz

This wine came before certification but was grown using organic practices. This wine, and all Southbrook wines are VQA certified which means that their wine comes from grapes were grown in Ontairo (not just blended in Ontario). VQA wines contribute significantly more to the local economy than grapes simply bottled or cellared in Ontario.

Domaine Magellan 2009 Grenache Blanc, Rousanne

This wine was made using organic methods but is uncertified. Domaine Magellan has been using organic practices since 1999 because they believe organic farming yields a better finished product, however they did obtain official organic certification until 2010 due to the high cost of certification. In 2010 they decided that the cost of obtaining certification was justified due to an increase in public demand for certified wines.

Domaine Magellan 2008 Syrah, Grenache, Carignane

The carignan grapes in this variety come from vines that are up to 60 years old, giving the grapes a mature and unique flavour. Older vines often have an advantage over younger vines because their deep root systems make them more tolerant to changes in rain and yield a more predictable finished grape. This wine is made using organic practices but is also uncertified.

Southbrook Vineyards 2010 Connect White

This wine is organic and is made of a blend of biodynamic and organic wines. The Connect line of wines considers itself down to earth and does it’s part to limit its impact on the earth as well. Connect bottles are sourced locally and are made from glass that is recycled in the Ontario Bag-it-back program.

Domaine Magellan 2010 Organic Merlot

Made in 2010, the first year that Domaine Magellan was officially certified organic, this wine is made from vines that are up to 30 years old.

Southbrook Vineyards 2009 Triomphe Chardonnay

One of the wines from Southbrook’s first season with biodynamic certification, this wine is certified both organic and biodynamic. Southbrook has also taken strides to create an environmentally sensitive public space and opened their LEED Gold certified hospitality space in 2008.
