The City of Toronto launched Live Green Toronto four years ago to promote greener cities and neighbourhoods. One of their innovations was to invite community groups to bid on the contract for engaging the public. One contract, led by EcoSpark, has a team of nine “community animators” whose job is to help community groups take on green projects and engage their members.

When the long-abandoned building at 357 College went up for sale, Anthony Aarts, my business partner and old college friend, saw a chance to build Toronto’s greatest hostel. When he approached me as financial backer, I saw a chance to build North America’s greenest hostel. The two visions came together as “Planet Traveler.”
