Sustainable Selections – Southbrook Vineyards & Domaine Magellan

The Sustainable Selections feature aims to focus on organic, and sustainably produced products currently on the market. This premier Sustainable Selections editorial, released in the Summer 2011 Issue, showcased an Ontario, Niagara region winery, Southbrook Vineyards, alongside a French, Languedoc region winery, Domaine Magellan. In this piece, you’ll find an overview of each producer, which details how they have striven to implement organic and sustainable practices. Three each of their wines are presented with tasting notes. Each winemaker introduced a new wine to the Ontario market for the first time through our tasting. We have also included suggested Ontario and French cheese pairings for your gastronomical pleasure!
Southbrook Vineyards 2009 Vidal Ice Wine

Quite possibly Canada’s first biodynamic icewine, this wine sets the standard for wine-makers everywhere. The biodynamic processes goes beyond organic and considers the entire ecosystem of a farm from bugs to ‘fertilizer’ to water systems and other animals living on the farm.

This wine came before certification but was grown using organic practices. This wine, and all Southbrook wines are VQA certified which means that their wine comes from grapes were grown in Ontairo (not just blended in Ontario). VQA wines contribute significantly more to the local economy than grapes simply bottled or cellared in Ontario.
