This is the only ice cream we found containing organic and fair trade ingredients. Organic Meadow, owned by a farmers’ cooperative in Ontario, buys its fair trade cocoa and sugar from organic farmers in the Caribbean. While not available in most major chain stores, this ice cream can be found in specialty stores, some Loblaws, and some Shoppers Drug Marts.

Organic Meadow, owned by an Ontario farmers’ co-operative, is typically known for its milk—but it also produces free-run eggs. The farm says that chickens are fed “free choice—meaning they are left to eat the feed that satisfies them. Our hens are never force-fed.” Their feed consists of organic flax and corn, and they’re housed in open-concept barns that give them access to fresh air and sunshine.

This bread contains organic whole wheat and whole spelt flour that is not specified as stone ground. Over 95% of the ingredients are organic. ShaSha states that it monitors and gets involved with all its third party suppliers so as to promote eco-friendly practices and procedures, and tries to shorten the supply chain whenever possible. The company also maintains and sanitizes its offices with organic and eco-friendly supplies. This bread, along with the bakery’s other organic and non-organic breads, flat breads, pizza crusts, breadcrumbs, and cookies, is available at many fine food stores as well as selected Metro and Loblaw locations.

This ice cream is one of only two organic ice creams we found available in grocery stores. Mapleton’s is organic but not fair trade; however, their vanilla ice cream is gluten- and nut-free. Their ice cream is also chemical-, GMO-, and salt-free, and no artificial ingredients are used. Mapleton’s is certified by Local Food Plus and provides land for Reroot, a community shared agriculture garden.

Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream

Kawartha Dairy is 73 year-old family-run operation based in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, in the heart of cottage country. A longtime mainstay of summer getaways, this ice cream is available in many specialty shops in Toronto. While it’s made with 100% Canadian fresh milk and cream, it’s neither organic nor fair trade.

Chapman’s Ice Cream

Don’t let the smiling kids fool you: Chapman’s makes no claims to be organic or fair trade. Its website says it is currently transitioning to a “greener 2L packaging,” but we’re not sure what will make this smaller packaging more environmentally friendly. However, the ice cream is made with 100% Canadian Milk and is certified as such. Chapman’s also offers lactose- and sugar-free ice creams.
