When you think about how much money people waste in a day – coffee, snacks, cookies, magazines, etc. – the 50 cents that you pay for your extra large, brown, organic, free run soft boiled egg for breakfast is not only reasonable but also humane to the welfare of a hen. We all shudder at the thought of puppy mills, so why don’t we shudder at the thought of the misery that battery hens go through while they sustain our very lives. Really, if more people bought organic – eggs, pork, chicken, beef, the demand for the product would bring down the price. Maybe the supermarkets could reduce some of their profit margin to pass more of the profit back to the farmers, thereby encouraging more farmers to produce more organic products. Just a thought!

Just so people are aware – Free-run eggs: Free-run hens are not confined to life in a cage, but are allowed to roam the floor of the barn. They are still densely packed into these barns with no required outdoor access. Free-run hens eat the same feed as conventionally raised hens, and are given antibiotics and hormones.
vs.
3. Free-range eggs: Free-range hens must have access to the outdoors for the majority of the year, with a roost area for resting. Their feed can’t contain antibiotics or hormones, and the roosts must have at least two square feet per hen. The government does not regulate free-range egg farms, so you must trust the farmers. Some farmers call these eggs “antibiotic-free” or “naturally-raised.”
Wish Loblaws stores would offer free RANGE
about 4 months ago
The problem with offering free-range eggs in a supermarket is that you wouldn’t be able to sell eggs in winter. Most hens stop laying when the days get short and start again in spring. In the free-run barns, they are kept in artificial lighting so they lay year-round.
